What is Fluoride… Pros & Cons

This Fluoride gets a bad reputation from many biological, holistic dentists and the general public lately … but is it deserved?

Here is a brief breakdown of what all the concern is about…

WHAT IS FLUORIDE?

Fluoride is an inorganic chemical compound that occurs naturally in many minerals, rocks, and even water sources. It is an anion, meaning it carries a negative charge, and is derived from the element fluorine. In the field of dentistry, fluoride has gained significant attention due to its beneficial effects on oral health. When fluoride is added to dental products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, or applied as a varnish or gel by a dental professional, it can help prevent tooth decay and strengthen tooth enamel. Fluoride works by promoting remineralization, which is the process of minerals like calcium and phosphate being incorporated back into the tooth structure, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.

Fluoride is a fluorine (F) compound that, when applied to the teeth, creates a compound called fluorapatite that coats the surface of ?. This can help prevent cavities by killing some plaque-causing bacteria and strengthening teeth, protecting them from acids that break down enamel.

DOES FLUORIDE WORK?

To prevent cavities, topical fluorides does do the job i.e. external application on the teeth as in toothpaste, varnishes used in Dental Clinics. Ingested fluorides may not actually prevent cavities, rather it works via topical application.

The CDC acknowledged this in 2001, making the statement that “ fluorides prevents dental caries predominately after eruption of the tooth into the mouth, and its actions primarily are topical for both adults and children.”

You DO NOT NEED to drink or swallow fluorides!!!

The danger of fluoride.jpeg

The major issue with fluoride, is ingesting it. Topical application works in preventing cavities and strengthening teeth, just a little dab will do.

However, If you feel you wouldn’t want to use a fluoride containing toothpaste, use one that contains HydroxyApatite.
