Routine Dental Checkup in Lagos

A routine dental checkup is far from mundane. While these periodic visits may appear to be just another part of our daily lives, they play a crucial role in fostering long-term oral health.

By integrating our onsite 3D X-ray sensor, which is indispensable for creating precise 3D models of the jawbone and surrounding structures, we achieve unparalleled accuracy and success rates in implant placements. This cements our status as pioneers in advanced dental solutions.

What many people fail to realize is that by maintaining routine dental checkups, we can prevent major dental issues such as

Tooth decay

Bone loss

Periodontal (gum) disease

Fractured teeth

TMJ disorder

Decay

By providing you with the resources needed to care for your smile and routinely assessing your oral health, you can maintain a natural set of teeth for a lifetime. Even if your parents lost their teeth at an early age, preventive dentistry can help break the cycle for both you and your children.

The Importance of Preventive Care

One of the primary reasons dental care is so crucial is to prevent problems before they begin. If you’re questioning how frequently you should schedule a dental examination, aiming for twice a year is advisable. A “routine” dental checkup every six months provides us with sufficient time to identify and address issues while they are still reversible or small enough to manage easily. Even if you aren’t experiencing any dental problems, you could be developing areas of enamel demineralization or gingivitis. Both conditions are reversible if detected early; however, if neglected, they can lead to irreversible damage to your smile.

Will I Need Dental X-rays or a Scan?

Utilizing diagnostic imaging is a vital aspect of your dental assessment. As certain areas, like spaces between teeth and beneath the gum line, remain unseen during a standard examination, we employ 3D X-ray technology, often known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), to analyze bone levels, identify abscesses, observe eruption patterns, and more. This advanced imaging technique generates three-dimensional images, providing detailed perspectives that aid in diagnosis, treatment planning, and assessing dental outcomes. It proves particularly beneficial in various dental fields such as implant placement, orthodontics, assessing jaw structure, sinuses, nerve pathways, and identifying intricate dental structures that traditional 2D imaging might not capture as clearly. The frequency of X-rays or scans depends on the type being used; some may be necessary annually, while others are typically conducted every 3-5 years.

Tips for Keeping Teeth Clean: Plaque and Tartar Buildup

To maintain optimal oral hygiene between dental cleanings, aim to thoroughly disrupt plaque at least twice daily. Brush your teeth for a minimum of two minutes, both in the morning and at night. Investing in an electric toothbrush can be particularly advantageous, as they typically remove more plaque compared to manual brushes.

Moreover, it’s essential to clean between your teeth at least once daily. If traditional flossing isn’t your preference, consider using a water flosser instead. Water flossers effectively reach between teeth, into gum pockets, and around or beneath fixed restorations like bridges and dental implants.

It’s crucial to note that plaque left undisturbed for 24 hours can harden into tartar. Excessive tartar buildup may eventually extend under the gum line, leading to gum disease. By scheduling a teeth cleaning every six months, we ensure thorough removal of these accumulations before they contribute to irreversible bone loss.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Periodontitis stands as the primary culprit behind adult tooth loss. However, through regular dental checkups, it can be effectively prevented. Common symptoms of gum disease often include:

Bleeding while brushing or flossing

Gum recession

Buildup of tartar

Gaps between teeth

Persistent bad breath (halitosis)

Evidence of bone loss visible on X-rays

Sensitivity in the gum tissues

Loose or detached gum tissues

If you’re dealing with active periodontal (gum) disease, a mere preventative dental cleaning won’t suffice to ensure a healthy smile. Instead, a procedure known as teeth scaling and root planing will be necessary to stabilize your oral health and manage the disease progression. Given that gum disease remains the leading cause of tooth loss, we strongly advise undergoing preventative dental cleanings before periodontitis leads to bone shrinkage and gum detachment.
